Wallpaper remains one of the quickest ways to completely transform a room. It often gets a bit of a rap in the renovation world as dated wallpaper is stripped back, but fresh, modern patterns bring a dramatic, and incredibly stylish appeal to an interior.
The key to avoiding an interior looking dated, is to keep up with wallpaper trends. Unlike paint, wallpaper isn’t so forgiving if a trend comes and goes.
We’ve got the low down on the hottest wallpaper trends for the year ahead, from the colors and patterns that will rule our interiors, to insider insights from leading wallpaper and interior brands.
Wallpaper Trends 2025: The Color & Patterns To Rule Your Interior
I am a wallpaper convert, through and through. Despite stripping reams of wallpaper off our renovation property earlier this year, it just solidified why you can’t leave a wallpaper up for 50 years and expect it to still be on trend. Yes, wallpaper trends change quicker than trending paint colors, but isn’t that the fun part about interior design? You can change it as often as you like to completely alter the dramatics of a room.
In 2025, textures, richer, pigmented colors and creating more immersive, cocooning spaces is at the heart of these wallpaper trends for the year ahead. If you’ve not considered wallpaper for your interior design bingo card for 2025 just yet, read on for more!
1.Richly Detailed Wallpaper
We’re seeing a rise in richly detailed wallpaper with bold color and pattern, combined. Whether you wrap it around the room for a cocooning feel (like the below bedroom), or opt for an accent wall detail, it brings instant drama to an interior scheme.
Houzz, the home renovation and design platform has real time insights into how people are decorating their homes. According to their platform insights, Houzz shared that delicately patterned wallpapers with a nod to the past are likely to become more prominent in 2025.
“We’re seeing that intricately detailed maps, botanical prints and chinoiserie patterns are cropping up in wallpapers on Houzz. A nostalgic celebration of pattern could also be seen at Decorex this year, with designers showcasing textiles and wall coverings with naturalistic illustrations, many with a nod to Victorian designs”.
The key to using intricate wallpaper like this in a room scheme without it feeling claustrophobic, or clashing with other colors is to use your chosen wallpaper as the base in the design. Pull colors from it to include in your decor accessories and any paint colors, and do choose one defining shade that will pull the room together.
2. Textured Wallpaper
Wallpaper adds a different dimension to an interior, and if you thought florals and heavily patterned wallpapers were your only choice, think again.
Throughout all of the interior trends for 2025 we are seeing in the kitchen through to the entryway, the introduction of texture and mixing materials for interest is high up the agenda.
This year we are seeing what I call ‘the new neutral’, the people pleaser wallpaper that can sit quietly in the background, whilst providing instant visual interest. It’s easier to refresh than panelling, but will have you bang-on-trend.
There’s many different types of textured wallpaper including the below from Finnish wallpaper brand which gives the look of a bamboo texture. It’s subtle, whilst adding instant verticality with the design.
An accent wall on a bed wall or an end wall in an entryway would give the perfect opportunity to showcase this. A textured wallpaper delivers a high end look without breaking the bank.
3. Retro Wallpapers
Retro wallpapers are big news, according to Beautiful Walls. Using data from Pinterest, Beautiful Walls have found searches for the terms ‘vintage décor’, ‘vintage home décor’ and ‘vintage room décor’ have all increased over the last year.
Tim Dixon, Managing Director of Beautiful Walls, said: “Vintage wallpaper is making a bold comeback. This nostalgic trend infuses homes with character and charm, inspiring a fresh approach to decorating. By blending old-world aesthetics with contemporary furnishings, designers are creating spaces that are both timeless and utterly modern“.
Intricate floral motifs in classic damask patterns exude timeless elegance, making them ideal for infusing spaces with vintage charm.
Tim added, “The first wallpapers were believed to be a damask, so you don’t get much more vintage than that. They offer a timeless backdrop wherever they are used but I love seeing them in ornate dining rooms. They are the perfect accompaniment to a lovely dinner.”
The trends we see are almost always cyclical, and if you’re willing to go bold in your interiors this year, why not lean into this retro revival for a fun, unique twist in your home.
4. Reimagined Striped Wallpaper
Stripes are a classic through and through, and striped interiors have been on the rise (literally) over the last year including innovative striped tileplay in bathrooms, and beyond.
Using data from Pinterest, Fiona Howard Wallpapers found interest in ‘Striped Wallpaper’ had increased 30 per cent over September, earlier this year, and it’s one that keeps rising, driven by other striped interior trends we are engaging with more.
Fiona’s own take on traditional stripes is Sway – a vertical stripe with a 70s twist. It has an undulating pattern which oscillates as it climbs.
Fiona Howard, Founder of her eponymous wallpaper brand, said: “Stripes are the ultimate chameleon of design.
“They can be bold and graphic, or subtle and understated. Their versatility means they can elevate any space, from a minimalist modern home to a classic traditional interior.
“Sway allowed me to offer a more playful, graphic take showing a different side to the trend.”
Stripes have been a founding pattern for years and are likely to remain undated anytime soon, but reimagined stripes will keep you ahead of the momentum in the interior, and they add such a fun dimension to a small powder room or reading nook.
5. Richer, Pigmented Shades
2025 is the year of going bold, and we are making strides to incorporating more color into our interiors that makes us feel good.
Wallpaper is an endearing way to start playing around with some color. Richer, more pigmented shades are on the color cards for 2025, we’ve seen from leading paint brands and interior designers that colors such as reds, yellows, blues, dark greens and plum based browns are going to be among the most popular colors in 2025.
You certainly don’t need to use wallpaper on all four walls to create an impact. If you’re going for a bolder wallpaper, try to tie in the dominant color on the rest of your walls. Not only will it make the wallpaper feel intentional and flow in the space, having a completely contrasting wall color will make the room feel blocky.
Accent walls in bold colors are a dated thing in interiors now, being considerate with color and making intentional choices will not only execute your design better, but you’ll feel better sitting within it.
6. Mural Wallpaper
As interior design continues to evolve, creating fully immersive, sensory spaces that enhance our well-being has become a top priority.
Mural wallpapers are set to be a significant wallpaper trend in 2025, transforming interiors into immersive, artistic spaces. These large-scale designs can turn an ordinary wall into a stunning work of art, adding depth and character to any room.
Forget what you know about wallpaper murals, you might be thinking of them as large scale art ideas with rainbows and deck chairs for children’s rooms, but there are so many different styles of mural wallpaper now that are catering to more interior design led spaces.
Choose to lean into some of the key trends for the year ahead with wallpaper, this includes natural inspired scenes (like the below gorgeous beach scene), scenic landscapes, geometric designs (playing on the retro revival trend) and historical and vintage motifs.
7. Fifth Wall Dramatics
The ceiling, or the fifth wall as interior designers like to call it, is getting a glow up.
Increasingly so, ceilings have been thrust into the spotlight in our interiors this year with designers taking the lead by banishing the bright white. Whether it’s been color drenching, or double drenching the ceiling for added impact, there is no sign of this trend going away.
Covering the ceiling in wallpaper is another cyclical trend which is coming back into fashion. After quietly cursing as I was removing the 50 year wallpaper from our kitchen ceiling earlier this year, I said ‘why would anyone ever think wallpapering their ceiling was a good idea?’.
Perhaps, not from a DIY stand point, but from an interior design angle, wallpaper is the most beautiful way to connect the ceiling to the rest of the room, creating a cocooning feel. Or you could add wallpaper just to the ceiling for a juxtaposition against the smoothness of painted walls.
The ceiling is the one place you can choose to have fun in, especially with a bedroom or a smaller room such as a downstairs toilet.
8. Earthy Tones
The searches for ‘earthy color palette’ on Pinterest have risen 200% over the last year, and this type of interior design trend is only set to increase in our interiors into 2025.
Our bodies have a desire for these colors, we’re more connected to nature than we think and a reason why we inherently lean towards certain colors such as greens, browns, terracottas and creams. It’s hard to feel bad in an earthy color scheme, and green is one of the easiest colors on the eyes, it feels soothing and restorative to be around.
This color palette translates into our wallpaper choices, and earthy inspired wallpapers and patterns will bring a modern, and uplifting aspect to any room.
Lean into earthy colors, or natural inspired prints such as leaves, botanical prints, or even coastal inspired patterns that bring us that sense of calm.
9. Grandmillenial, Countryside Inspired Wallpapers
The ‘Grandmillenial’ design trend was one that was coined in 2024, originating on TikTok. This grounding design trend combines traditional decor with modern elements and has pushed countryside inspired wallpapers into the spotlight.
You don’t need to have a perfectly restored cottage to lean into this wallpaper trend. There are so many quaint and charming patterns to delve into with this interior style.
Delicate, vintage-inspired floral patterns are synonymous with Grandmillenial style. Think soft roses, peonies, or wildflowers in a pastel or muted palette. Chinoiserie, botanicals, whimsical motifs and classic stripes in softer tones are some wallpaper designs that will have you ruling the trends for 2025 in no time.
