I’ve always loved the idea of having a pergola. They signify a real nod to outdoor living, and because they create a boundary in a large space, it makes it easier to create a super comfortable, and well stylised space.
I’m a fan of both wooden and steel pergolas for the right outdoor space, but after Backyard Discovery launched into the UK market, we fell in love with their new metal Trenton pergola which received the Good Housekeeping Home Reno Award in 2022 in the Excellent Exteriors category!

The area of the garden it was being placed in experiences a lot of wind as its totally unprotected, so we needed a robust solution that would weather well, and look amazing.
Pergola Assembly
The metal pergola arrived in three boxes and some of the best instructions we could have hoped for! All of the parts were in labelled bags and each step was incredibly easy to follow. There was also an app that we downloaded which had all the visual instructions, I cannot stress how amazing the addition of this was to the paper instructions, and SO helpful in visualising how it needed to look at each stage. The only battle we had was trying to get it assembled in the dry, hello Spring in the UK.
Myself and my partner got it assembled within the day. It’s definitely a 2 person job as some of the parts, especially the posts are very heavy. It’s of steel construction so it’s super robust and doesn’t move when in place.
We got all of the parts connected for the top and sides before laying everything out ready for the assembly stage.
We then had to get the posts ready with the necessary brackets that would take the top panels.
Once we had all the parts ready for assembly, erecting the pergola absolutely flew! I couldn’t believe how quickly we got to this stage.
This is the steel pergola after construction and you can leave it with the open panels if you want sunlight to penetrate through, yet you still get a bit of coverage.
Alternatively, with this metal pergola, it also comes with an integrated full shade canopy so you can create a perfect shelter from the sun. Aesthetically it looks stunning, even without the canopy in action.
Pergola Styling
Of course, once we had erected the pergola it was onto my favourite part, the styling. The pergola has a stylish black finish so it lends a really modern feel to any garden space, and it helps to ground the area too. Especially true of this garden where its so large, it’s provided a really nice boundary that’s added to the overall visual appeal.
Pergolas are perfect for adding sun loungers, chairs, tables and large sofas, and pretty much however you choose to envisage using the space.
We will be elevating our outdoor furniture set later this year, but for now we wanted to create a cosy seating area that was stylish, cosy and perfect for a toast or two under the English sun.
Ready for a closer look at the styling under the pergola? Because this has created a gorgeous boundary, you’ll want to create another boundary underneath the furniture to avoid it feeling like it’s floating.
I love adding a versatile outdoor jute rug, it gives a rustic and natural nod to the world around it and it contrasts beautifully with the black finish of the pergola.
Don’t be afraid to introduce a welcome pop of colour with your accessories such as throws and cushions. I tend to lean towards blue for a coastal, Mediterranean feel, but I love additions of terracotta too.
Don’t forget a side table for those glasses of champagne, books and some effortless styling. It’s all in the detail when creating that cosy, outdoor living space underneath a pergola.
With the canopy added over the top which is super easy to put on and take off as required, it makes the space feel even cosier, case in point.
I think what I love the most about this steel pergola is its durability. It has all weather, all season functionality, is maintenance free and has rust resistance.
