There’s no denying where the direction of interiors is going in the following year. We’re taking more and more inspiration from the natural world as the years go by, and it has something to do with how that makes us feel in our homes.
A reaction from the world, when we’re home we want to be cocooned and supported in the presence of feel good colours and tactile elements.
And, our living rooms are those spaces that help us to unwind after a long day. After speaking with a handful of designers in the industry, these trends will make that pursuit of a calmer living space that bit easier, whilst looking utterly stylish.
From nature led colours and tactile layering to conscious colour choices towards wood, here are all the 2027 living room trends worth knowing about.
The 2027 Living Room Trends Everyone’s Obsessing Over, According To Designers
1. Nature Inspired Greens Are Written In The Stars For 2027
Nothing is as timeless as a green, but we’re seeing new colour ways of green this year with both Benjamin Moore and Behr launching a green as their 2027 colour of the year. These selected colours aren’t done on a whim, they’re the culmination of market data and emerging trends that shape it.
With both Webster Green and Behr’s Grounded, they’re deep, earthy driven shades of green that are cosy and super grounding which are perfect for bringing character and cosiness to a living room, no matter the orientation.
Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture & Choice says, “With the popularity of retro interiors and dark woods, it’s no surprise that olive green is having its moment. Olive green is celebrated for its versatility, as it feels right at home as an upholstery pick or as a wall colour”.
“A lot of designers and paint brands are loving olive green as a wall colour, with more variety to choose from. Depending on the lighting in your room and the right styling, it can appear soft and cosy or a bit moody and subdued.”
Whilst olive and earthy greens are on the rise, there’s a whiff of a new green nuance on the scene, a shade that’s also being referred to as ‘celery’ or ‘chartreuse’ because of its distinct yellow undertone. Take a look at Churlish Green by Farrow and Ball for a celery inspired paint shade for your living room.
Chloe Barrow, Head of Creative Interiors at Laura James adds, “We’re already seeing bright yellow-green shades gaining attention, so chartreuse is going to be one of the more surprising colours to watch in interiors”.
2. Organic Modern Design Trend
Karim shares that the ‘organic modern’ design trend is predicted to be one of the key living room trends as we head into 2027. This trend is a blend between both the nature that surrounds us and soft curves.
“Expect to see lots of curved furniture and accents for this trend, from rounded sofas and curved armchairs to round coffee tables”.
“Sofas with low backs and profiles are emerging, softly anchoring the room with their gentle presence. Meanwhile, for the dining room, expect to see lots of wood with natural grain and pops of earth tones for upholstery. When it comes to this trend, there will be lots of layering with natural textures like wood alongside jute and linen”.
This design trend is light, uplifting but grounded by those earthy tones and natural elements. Limestone effect wallpaper will bring both texture and warmth to walls, or consider using a soft, warm neutral such as Oxford Stone by Farrow and Ball to create a suitable foundation to build from.
3. Warmer Toned Flooring
One interior trend that is being shared across an interior is the return to warmer toned flooring. Grey washed planks and soft honey oaks are making way for warmer tones, and darker, grounding woods such as walnut.
James Higgins, flooring expert at Head of eCommerce at Online Carpets says, “I foresee a greater move towards warmer tones rather than the cold greys that have been popular in recent years. Textures from carpeted flooring and rugs, with the ability to create warm and more considered looks across living rooms, will also increase in popularity”.
“Cost and the longevity of flooring will also influence the choices people make in 2027. Materials with a more accessible price point that can convincingly replicate wood or stone will have wider appeal as people look to update their homes on tighter budgets”, adds James.
If a complete redesign isn’t on the cards for 2027, you can still get onboard with this trend by selecting a warmer toned area rug to ground your furniture. Just ensure you get a large enough rug so at least the front legs of furniture on the outer area are comfortably sitting on it as well.
4. Layering will be taken to the next level
Interiors are getting more personal, and one of the best ways to achieve a truly unique home is to layer. Even more important in a living room, the art of layering different fabrics, textures and colours achieves a cosy, and ultra stylish room.
John Law, Creative Director at Woodhouse & Law Interior Design shares, “Layering will be taken to the next level, with interiors embracing a rich mix of textures – from linens on walls to pleats, lacquers and layered fabrics. Rather than matching, it’s about creating depth and interest through contrast”.
You can think of it like building a really good, layered outfit. You’re not going to combine the same shade on three surfaces or textiles. But, you’ll take one and then add two other tonally relevant colours so it pulls the scheme together, but it keeps it feeling interesting and creates movement with those colours, and opposing textures.
In terms of texture, boucle is still a really popular choice for living rooms but Elena Navarro, an Interior Designer and Professional Organizer at Sparkly Maid Austin, suggests that rather than applying thick, boucle textures to every surface in the living room, 2027 will bring a renewed interest in mixing varied textures throughout these rooms.
“Leather, wood, brushed cotton, plaster, wool, handmade ceramics, linen, and velvet will be popular texture trends with staying power”.
5. Aubergine Has Entered The Chat
We’re having a serious moment for aubergine in 2027, the rich, indulgent sister of purple, and it feels so good in a living room for the cosiest, most intimate feel.
“Aubergine will add personality to these rooms. This deep purplish red works beautifully with dark woods, aged metals, natural textiles, and moody greenery. I think of it as the accent colour of 2027. A few pillows, a bench, or an upholstered accent chair will make aubergine look perfectly at home in a living room”, says Navarro.
Featured below is Townsend Harbor Brown by Benjamin Moore, a grounded burgundy reminiscent of clay-rich soil. An example of how leaning into a colour drenched approach with lots of natural light creates a moody, yet super cosy colour scheme.
Play on the layering trend here to add some tactile softness to the colour scheme, and balance with some cooler neutrals such as grey and taupe.
6. Intimate Conversation Areas
The days of centering the seating options around the TV placement might well be over. Navarro shares that she believes living room layouts will become more intimate in 2027, homeowners will create conversation areas where the sofa and chairs relate to one another (rather than the television).
“People can soften these groupings with complementary rugs, sculptural floor lamps, side tables, or houseplants. Homeowners should still make sure there is room to move around all of the furniture pieces. Rooms shouldn’t be so crammed that it is difficult to get from point A to point B”.
I always find this is also a great way to get homeowners away from pushing all of their furniture against the outer walls of the room which feels anything but social.
Small pouffes can be a smart addition to a social living room, they can easily be moved and tucked away when not in use.
7. Dark Wood Is In Focus
The return of dark wood is going to feature heavily in living rooms in 2027. From walnut finished units to darker tones of wooden flooring.
Juliette Thomas, Founder and Creative Director of Juliettes Interiors shares, “dark wood is making a confident return. Rich walnut, black ash, warm oak veneers and distinctive timbers are appearing across luxury furniture, bringing depth, character and a greater sense of lived-in appeal to contemporary homes“.
The trend forms part of a wider movement towards warm modernism which is an aesthetic that retains the clean lines and considered simplicity of modern design while replacing starkness with richer materials, softer colours and more tactile finishes. “Dark wood has an extraordinary ability to give an interior depth and presence“, adds Juliette.
