Powdered Paint? Yes, Really! The Plastic-Free Paint That’s Cleaning Up Interiors

Paint like you've never seen it before, and it's kinda a big deal for your walls, and the planet.

If you’re ready to have your mind blown, wait for this.

It’s not everyday I get shocked by innovation in the interior world, and where paint brands and colours are concerned, we know where we stand. Your standard metal tins of liquid paint, a whole host of colours to choose from, and they might smell too.

So, when I got wind of this revolutionary powdered paint by PAINT ZERO, I was interested. PAINT ZERO have developed a patented, waterless, plastic-free paint system that eliminates fossil fuels, toxic preservatives, and VOCs from the supply chain, while radically reducing emissions.

It’s clean-tech meets design thinking, a compostable, non-toxic, powder-based paint that performs beautifully and sustainably. And yes, it really is in powder form.

Why Powdered Paint?

We’re creatures of habit, so the idea of having to mix your own paint from scratch might initially put you off. But beneath the paint lid, there’s much more going on, and do you really know what you’re putting onto your walls?

“Most people are shocked to learn what’s in their paint,” said Ross Harling, inventor of PAINT ZERO. “With Paint Zero, families finally have a genuinely safe option, for their homes and families that doesn’t compromise on quality”.

PAINT ZERO’s patented formulation eliminates petrochemicals and toxins from their paint, offering a safe, beautiful alternative that performs like a premium wall paint. Whilst conventional paints contribute significantly to ocean microplastics, PAINT ZERO is 100% plastic and toxin free.

“We’ve listened closely to the growing concerns people have about the safety and sustainability of the paints they bring into their homes. At PAINT ZERO, we’ve created a paint that’s not only safe and sustainable, but also convenient for everyday use. That’s something I’m really proud of“, shared Clare Cunningham, Creative Director, PAINT ZERO.

How Does It Work?

PAINT ZERO’s unique powdered format comes packaged in lightweight compostable pouches, so there’s no single use tins or endless waste that comes with renovating a room, or an entire house.

Due to its revolutionary powder format, it can also be stored for up to five years without spoiling, the same certainly can’t be said for half used tins of paint a few months down the line, something I can certainly vouch for!

To use the powder, you simply pour powder and hot water into a clean container (following usage instructions) and whisk until the powder and water are thoroughly mixed. The powder in each container is white regardless of the shade, and the colour only appears once the hot water is added.

Once the paint has cooled down, it can be applied like any other paint with a roller or brush of your choice.

PAINT ZERO Celebrates Patent Win with New Signature Shade ‘Ocean’

Celebrating their newly granted UK patent for its revolutionary plant-based, powdered decor paint, they have released their brand new shade, Ocean.

Blues are having a moment in interiors at present, a soothing and cooler alternative to greens that just feel good to be around.

Their new shade Ocean is a rich, deep blue inspired by the very thing it’s helping to protect, a tribute to cleaner seas and microplastic-free living

My Initial Thoughts

Having specified a lot of paint, and personally used a lot through my own renovations first hand, I’ve gotten to know what makes a good quality finish and what doesn’t.

Can a powdered paint really live up to traditional paint? I’m not sure without putting it to the test.

I have seen some example videos online, but the jury is out on the quality overtime and of course, how scrubbable the paint is.

The other instant downside is that they don’t at present offer an eggshell option so for colour drenching or painting a busy home/transitional space, this just wouldn’t be an option I would be able to consider. I often use eggshell on the walls for a much more durable finish with a flat matt on the ceiling for a beautiful softness. As they are a relatively new paint brand, they do state that they are developing new formulations so this could be something we see in the coming months which would make the paint much more accessible.

I am yet to try this paint though, so once I have, I will be sure to share a more informed opinion regarding the quality of the paint.

PAINT ZERO is made to order and is available online in 250ml sample packs and 2.5L packs, with 50 paint colours to choose from.

What do you think, would you give it a try?
