Paint seems like the obvious choice when it comes to redecorating a bedroom, but trust me, it’s worth thinking outside of the box on this one.
Wallpaper is personally one of my favourite ways to transform a room into an intimate, subjective space. Long been loved for its use on walls, but it’s now making its way onto wardrobes.
This new trend on the block has been gaining popularity as homeowners seek unique ways to personalise their spaces, transforming furniture into statement pieces that enhance the overall aesthetic of a room.
According to James Mellan-Matulewicz, Creative Director of Bobbi Beck: “Wallpapering a wardrobe is a simple yet effective way to elevate interiors without committing to permanent changes”.
Here’s everything you need to know about trying it on your own wardrobes.
Wallpaper On Wardrobes – It’s A Trend
It’s one of those trends that you might think, “why did I never think of this before?”. Instead of wallpapering the rest of your room, just getting your wardrobes involved can create a playful, fun accent in a room.
Or alternatively, try the wallpaper drenching trend and involve your wardrobes in this fully encompassing look for something a little bit special.
“Using wallpaper on wardrobes allows people to experiment with pattern and texture in a way that’s less daunting than covering an entire wall.” says Mellan-Matulewicz.
“With wallpapers coming in all sorts of finishes, peel and stick wallpapers allow for easy application and removal. It’s an ideal solution for renters, making it perfect for creating a customised look that can be effortlessly updated or taken down when moving out.”
If peel-and-stick wallpaper isn’t suitable for decorating wardrobes, Mellan-Matulewicz says: “using paste-the-wall wallpaper is a great alternative to peel-and-stick options. To help it adhere properly and allow for easier removal later, it’s best to apply a primer to the wardrobe surface first. This creates a smooth, sealed base that improves adhesion and makes future updates simpler.”
Where wallpapering a room can become expensive quite quickly, tackling just a wardrobe is more cost effective, but the result is just as transformative.
James added, “Wallpaper can cover imperfections and give worn or outdated wardrobes a completely new lease of life. It’s a sustainable way to update furniture rather than discarding it.”
To achieve the best results, selecting the right type of wallpaper design is key. Opting for a wallpaper mural offers the best results. Landscapes and scenic designs work particularly well flowing seamlessly across the doors, turning the wardrobe into the perfect statement feature.
But don’t let this stop you from trying daintier, more detailed designs on smaller scale wardrobes, or perhaps leaning into something a little more classic like a stripe if you’re unsure about using full scale pattern in your bedroom.
There’s no denying it’s a fab way to introduce a tactile feel to a bedroom, so you may even consider going down the route of adding a simple, yet textured wallpaper design to bring some life to a tired, old wardrobe. Take inspiration from the below, a simple raffia effect wallpaper which totally transforms this otherwise plain wooden wardrobe.
