Wondering what colours go with grey carpet? Listen up.
I’ve said it before, but if you have grey carpet in your home, you will always be ruled by grey carpet.
Over the last 5 or so years, grey carpet has been freshly laid in hundreds of thousands of homes. I see it as the top choice for developers that are flipping houses and in new build properties. There’s long been some kind of thought process behind grey carpet that it’s the most versatile colour for carpet, and it goes with everything.
I’m here to tell you that it isn’t.
Grey carpet will forever rule you and your decor choices. Whilst it does go with other colours, it’s not an easy colour to work with because of its cold hue.
And, if you’ve landed on this blog, it’s probably because you’re struggling with colours to pair with your grey carpet. Right?
You’re in the right place. Despite my reservations about grey carpet, let’s have a full look at what colours go with grey carpet, and how to stop it ruling you!
What Colour Curtains Go With Grey Carpet?
White Curtains
If you want to keep things neutral in your interiors, white curtains are a great pairing for grey carpet. This look is perfect for minimal and modern style interiors.
To keep things feeling light and airy, opt for a set of white linen curtains that will deliver a beautiful, open aesthetic.
Grey Curtains
Layering another shade of grey onto your curtains is a great way to add depth and interest to the space. Never overlap with the same shade of grey as it will make the room feel washed out, and flat.
You’ll want to opt for a shade a few shades lighter or darker to create that depth and uniformity in the room.
Black Curtains
You don’t need to have a gothic interior to relish in the beauty of black curtains. Black curtains add a defining statement to any room, and contrast well with a grey carpet.
Black curtains should ideally hang to the floor to help elongate the room. This colour of curtains are well suited to most modern style home decor schemes, tie the room together with other black accents for interior harmony.
Blush Pink Curtains
The blush pink, copper and grey days are not just a distant memory. Blush pink works beautifully with a grey carpet and helps to add some subtle colour and warmth to the space.
This cool colour combination can be used sparingly throughout the rest of the decor scheme too with textiles, cushions and decor accessories.
What Colours Go With Grey Carpet?
So, your grey carpet is now laid, or you’ve just moved into a new home where you’ve had no say over the carpet.
Carpet can be a big expense, so freshening up the walls and carefully choosing pieces of furniture is one of the best, and most affordable ways to create a cohesive space if you have grey carpet.
Grey Carpet & White
It’s no secret that white is one of the best collaborative colours for pretty much most shades. White walls are still one of the most popular finishes in a home as it’s fuss free, and is a good place to start if you’re still uncertain on what colour you eventually want to go for.
White walls will help to lift a room, whilst the grey carpet grounds it. It’s best to stick with just white walls, and not incorporate too much white through furnishings or decor accessories to avoid the room feeling bland.
The only issue with a bright white paint is that it will show every scuff, mark and dirt. It’s not the best choice for busy households, or those with pets as it will require consistent touch ups.
Grey Carpet & Off White/Cream
If you like the idea of a lighter interior but not the constant touch ups that come with bright white paint then an off white/cream is a much better option.
Just check the undertones of the white/cream so you can see what other tonal colours will work well with it. An off white such as Egyptian Cotton paint by Dulux is one of my favourite neutral choices that works well with grey carpet.
Grey Carpet & Blush Pink
If you’ve got no barrier to selecting the colour wall choice of your dreams, then so be it with blush pink. This is probably one of my favourite colour combinations with grey, it evokes a really feminine look that I love.
A single feature wall, whether it panelled or just painted will add a beautiful focal point to a bedroom. If blush pink walls aren’t your thing, pink is a great colour to layer in a room with grey carpet, especially with decor accessories, cushions and throws.
Grey Carpet & Black
If you’re creating a modern looking interior decor scheme, incorporating black is a perfect choice. A black accent is a defining characteristic of modern design, and it provides a defining and grounding accent against the neutrality of a grey carpet.
Black should be used sparingly with interior hardware details such as door handles, small pieces of furniture like console tables or side tables, and as an accent on decor accessories such as prints. However, I have seen it nailed in a decor scheme when used on all the walls.
Grey Carpet & Olive Green
Olive green is a beautiful neutral colour that I love to see in modern, rustic style interiors. A colour like this works well on walls, as grey carpet helps to ground and define the space.
Or, it can be used as an accent colour on cushion detailing, throws and decor accessories. Olive green can be paired beautifully with cream and grey too.
Grey Carpet & Mustard
Perhaps, even a more daring step than black? But boy, mustard can be a match made in heaven with grey!
Mustard walls and decor accessories really help to warm the grey up, adding a beautiful bit of colour and interest to the space. It’s perfect for adding a more masculine finish to a room.
How Can I Make My Grey Carpet Look Nice?
Grey carpet is one of the hardest carpets to work with, but you can make it look nice, rather than just living with it.
Keep things neutral on the walls with whites, creams, blush pink or olive green. Avoid using other grey furnishings, and you can always add a beautiful area rug to break up the monotony of grey in the space.
A beautiful, wool cream rug would go some way to disguising the grey carpet. I would actively encourage area rugs on carpet anyway to avoid the look that your furniture is floating. Plus, it’s a great way to break the grey up!
What Colour Rug Goes With Grey Carpet?
Adding an area rug on top of grey carpet will help to ground furniture, and provide definition to the space. Pair with a cream wool rug for a rustic/modern look, or introduce a warmer colour such as navy blue, green or even red if you want to make a real statement.
If grey carpet was never your first choice, then a rug really is a great way to break up on the monotony of this colour.
Whilst I’m not a fan of grey carpet, there really is a multitude of colours that work well with it, not against it.
Whilst you can certainly still be daring with this colour by introducing bold pops of colour such as red and black, if you’re looking to create a minimal, modern style home decor scheme, try to stick to other neutral colours that lift the space, as you need to take the edge of the coldness that grey carpet can bring to a space.
